                      Woodlice
IMG_0978.JPGIMG_0994.JPGIMG_0964.JPG

Woodlice have a rigid segmented, long exoskeleton and fourteen jointed limbs. In New Zealand we call them slaters.

They eat dead plant material, and they are usually active at night.

They can be found under wood that is on the ground and under plants, weeds in cracks in the concrete.

I lifted a piece of wood up outside at home and found a heap of woodlice. They were all grouped together and then they all ran away to find somewhere to hide.

The next day I went outside and found some woodlice there were lots of them under a weed.

I think there were 30 woodlice it looked to be a whole family there as they were from tiny babies to adults.

The colours varied between white when they are little to dark grey when they are big.

From watching the woodlice I have found that they like to hide and when I disturbed them they all ran the found a new hiding place.

WALT to appreciate that science is a way of explaining the world.
WALT build on prior knowledge and to share and examine our knowledge; to carry out experiments and simple investigations.
                 Aphids

The plants that are mostly infected are rose’s. The aphids are mostly found on the new growth.

The first one I looked at had none, second one had 6 of them and the third one had 21 of them.

That is why you need to spray your rose’s so they don’t go on the other plants.

Thank you for reading my science badges about aphids.

Slugs and Snails in my garden
IMG_0918.JPGIMG_0912.JPGIMG_0914.JPG

Slugs and snails like to live on your silverbeet in the garden. They live in your garden as they love to eat vegetables like cabbage, silverbeet and especially love anything with juicy green leaves.  Slugs and snails like to come out when it is dark because they don’t like dry hot places. Snail actually carry their homes with them on their back so if they get scared they will hide in their shells.

Mum and I went outside at night time with a torch to have a look in our garden and we found slugs and snails eating our silverbeet.  This made me remember that this is my science project for School so I took some picture of them and the holes they made in our vegetables.

Thank you for reading my science badge about slugs and snails and where they live.  Hope you enjoyed it.
